A woman from Massachusetts has been found guilty on Friday of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide.
Michelle Carter now faces a 20 year prison sentence for the death of 18 year old Conrad Roy. Roy died in his truck in 2014 from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carter had known the toxic substance was in his truck, and encouraged her boyfriend to get back inside through text messages.
“She is mindful that the process in the truck will take approximately 15 minutes,” said Judge Lawrence Moniz.
Carter, upon knowing what was happening and where he was, did not call police or Roy’s family.
Two months after Roy’s death, Carter sent a message to one of her classmates, admitting she was to blame.
“It’s my fault,” she said. “I could have stopped him but I told him to get back in to the car.”
Carter faces up to 20 years in prison. She is scheduled to be sentenced on August 3.
