So 2017’s MTV VMAs was nothing short of interesting. Katy Perry hosted, Kendrick Lamar set a guy on fire, Taylor Swift made a comeback (kind of) and Fifth Harmony threw massive shade towards their former bandmate.
Where did it all begin? Well, with Katy Perry of course. The singer introduced the 34th annual show in a spacesuit.
“When I do speak, it does get me into trouble. I’m looking forward to all the trouble I’m getting into tonight.”
Kendrick Lamar was the first performance of the night, with ‘DNA’ and ‘Humble’. His performance featured a man on fire, yes, FIRE. The rapper took home six wins for his rap, and remained as ‘humble’ as ever when claiming them, mentioning his kids.
And oh my, P!nk, ladies and gentlemen, gave us nostalgia. She performed hits like ‘What About Us’ and then gave an empowering speech about rejecting gender norms, paying reference to Michael Jackson and David Bowie.
Nicki Minaj performed alongside Katy Perry for ‘Swish Swish’. And let’s not forget that latex pink two piece. WOW, curves!
Shade alert. Fifth Harmony opened their performance of ‘Angel’ with a visual display. The four girls stood on glass boxes with a faceless fifth memeber, clearly meant to be in the place of former member Camila Cabello. The group danced as this ‘fifth’ member fell backwards off the stage. Ouch. The girls then threw back their hoods and began to sing. They continued to dance through their performance.
Katy Perry tried to make jokes but uh, no honey. They seemed to fall flat every time and comedians like Ellen DeGeneres did not look very impressed, and appeared to wince at one stage when Perry shot fake breast milk under her dress. Yikes.
Miley Cyrus people, has changed her ways, maybe because she’s ‘Younger Now’? The singer took a U-turn from 2016’s VMAs and performed her new hit in a fun and low-key way. She wore a poodle skirt and cat-eye glasses as she pounced around the stage. The singer, early on Sunday, posted a picture of her last year twerking up against Robin Thicke, with a picture of her dad Billy Ray Cyrus inset.
She captioned the pic: “Sorry Dad…. I’ll be good tonight I promise … @vmas”.
And a what the hell moment came 20 minutes into the show when Taylor Swift’s new video for her hit ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ premiered. Although Swift was not present at the awards, her video certainly caused a stir and brings back memories of 2009, when Kanye West grabbed the microphone off her. Ahh, good times.
Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj closed out the show with their song ‘Swish Swish’ and it was a bit flat, especially when Minaj just stood there and let the camera move around her.
So who were some of the winners then?
