Tonight is the biggest night in music. The Grammys begins tonight at 8 and we get to see some of our favorite artists perform (hey, Queen Bey) and we’ll see which artist walks home with a golden award in their hand. We all know that a Grammy is one of the most coveted awards an artist can receive.
There is one category tonight that has people talking the most and that is the Best Rap Album category. In the category, we have Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid m.a.a.d City”, Kanye’s “Yeezus”, Drake’s “Nothing Was The Same”, Jay Z’s “Magna Carta Holy Grail”, and last but not least, Macklemore’s “The Heist”.
The reason everyone is talking about this particular category is because Macklemeore is, ironically, the black sheep of the crew. Many are speculating that Macklemore will when the category, which is a thought that has many up in arms over. The first reason is that many are saying that Macklemore shouldn’t even be considered rap. Whether that is the case is neither here or there; that topic is pretty subjective. Others are speculating that Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid M.a.a.d City” album is far better than “The Heist”. I’m not the biggest fan of Macklemore and I have listened to their album, but it wasn’t one that stuck with me. Kendrick’s album, however, is one that I still listen to today as if it just came out last week.
The speculators are right; Kendrick’s album has been universally accepted across the board as a great album. The competition between Macklemore and Kendrick is sticking out like a sore thumb, so I can’t wait to see who will come out on top.
Of course, Macklemore being white plays a huge part in the issue as well. For those that don’t know, the Grammy’s are not fan-voted awards but rather are selected by members of various labels and associations. Once Macklemore popped up on the scene and started winning awards that were better off in another rap artist’s hands, many said that hip-hop was becoming too “white washed”.
The awards start tonight and we’ll just have to see who will come out on top!
