Saturday night, Hot 97 and Boost Mobile brought ‘Hot For The Holidays’ to the Prudential Center and THZ was there to bring you exclusive coverage of all the hot performances.
Hot 97’s DJ Camillo, DJ Enuff, Rosenberg and NessNitty hit the stage to host one of the best holiday showcases of the year with performances from TI, Usher, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Joey Bada$$, Lil Yachty, Jidenna, Kehlani, Funk Flex & Friends ft. Fat Joe and New Yorks own, Remy Ma, Young M.A, Phresher, and French Montana, also bringing out surprise guests Teyana Taylor, A$AP Ferg, Jeezy and Casanova.
Jidenna opened the show with ‘Long Live The Chief’ as over 18,000 fans gathered for what was promised to be an amazing night. Newcomer, Kehlani also performed, followed by Joey Bada$$ and Lil Yachty, bringing out hits like ‘Brocolli’ and ‘Check My Style.’
Once the stage was warm, it was on! TI came out and took over the arena with what ended up being not only the longest, but the best set of the night. Bringing back old hits like ‘Top Back’ and ‘Bring ‘Em Out.’ The crowd went crazy when he introduced ‘You Don’t Know Me’
“You might of heard my name associate with all kinds of bullsh** [because] I don’t know how to godd*** sit still”
Young M.A took to the stage to perform her hit single, ‘OOOUUU,’ followed by Funk Flex and Friends, who never disappoint. Performances from French Montana and Jeezy, Casanova, Fat Joe and Remy Ma had the building on fire with hits like ‘Lean Back’ and ‘All The Way up!’
But like every good show, there’s always some messiness. And that came when it was time for Young Thug to hit the stage and the audio team just couldn’t get it right. Young Thug was visibly agitated as he paced back and fourth across the stage, saying things into the mic like, “get it together” and “we finna have a good time in this mofu**a!”
He attempted to keep the audience engaged by performing his single, “Power” accapella, but quickly became frustrated. “Get yo’ sh**t together ni**a!” was the last thing you heard as he slammed the mic and walked off the stage leaving his fans waiting in anticipation for a performance that never happened.
The sound team couldn’t get it together for the rest of the show.
Travis Scott was able to perform despite the audio issues and put on an electric show. He had the audience on their feet, rapping every line to hit singles like “Swang” and “Pick Up The Phone,” following a tribute to Kanye West, performing songs from his Life Of Pablo album. His energy was so magnetic that at the very last second, Young Thug came back to the the stage to join in!
Usher closed the show with what seemed like a Karaoke Night. It was more audience participation than anything else, but we can’t deny that his impeccable dance moves did compensate a little!
Even so, what would have been a great closing set left fans disappointed. Although Usher brought out surprise guests like Teyana Taylor and A$AP Ferg, and Young Thug back on to the stage for ‘No Limit’, it wasn’t enough to keep fans happy. As THZ left the building, you could feel the frustration from all the disappointed ticket-holders.
At the very end of the concert, Young Thug came down and jumped into the pit offering fans his sincerest apologies for not performing and showed love to everyone in the front row. Overall, it was still a great holiday concert and hopefully no one was fired.
