A 17-year-old Moroccan girl committed suicide after a vicious attack.
On Tuesday, the young girl doused herself in a flammable substance and set herself on fire in Ben Guerir, near Marrakesh. She was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries.
According to Daily Mail, the girl took her own life after the eight men who gang raped her last year were released from prison and threatened to release a home-made video of their crime.
Seven of the men were described as well-known drug traffickers. According to Omar Arbib, a member of a Marrakech-based human rights association, all of the men were released on bail after “influential people” intervened.
This is not the first time a situation like this has occurred in Morocco. 16-year-old Amina Filali killed herself in 2012 after she was forced to marry her rapist. The rapist escaped prosecution by marrying Filali. This controversial law was later repealed in 2014.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.
