After releasing its annual year-in-review data on Tuesday, Facebook revealed that sports were a major percentage of the topics mentioned on their website. ESPN reports that LeBron James was Facebook’s most talked about athlete, followed by recently retired New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

Per ESPN, the annual Facebook top 10 ten lists are measured by the frequency of the topic’s mentions in posts. Among all the global topics in the world, the World Cup was number 1 which isn’t too surprising since soccer is the most popular sport in the world even though it is not as popular in the U.S. Sports also took a couple other spots in the top 10 with the Super Bowl XLVIII at number 8 and the Sochi Winter Olympics at number 10.

It is actually pretty crazy and a bit scary when you put it all into perspective. There are many diehard sports fan out there, but the fact that it outweighs everyday topics and problems of our society is quite astonishing. It just shows sports is a large part of everyone’s weekly activities, whether it is playing or just simply watching and talking about it as a fan.
