Michael Phelps continued to prove why he is the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time.
On Tuesday, the Team USA swimmer took home the gold medal in both the 200m butterfly and the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay. This brought Phelps’ total gold medal count to 21. He also has two silver and two bronze medals as well.
Phelps did not win his historic 21st medal alone. He has his teammates–Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Francis Hass–to thank, too.
Unfortunately, the night did not go as well for USA tennis pro Serena Williams. The tennis legend was surprisingly knocked out of the games by Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. During their four previous match-ups, Williams defeated Svitolina every time.
Despite the upsetting loss, Williams was just happy to have been able to compete in Rio.
“It’s obviously disappointing but, you know, she played really well and I think the better player won today,” Williams told CNN.
“It didn’t work out the way I wanted to, but at least I was able to make it to Rio. That was one of my goals.”
No matter what happens, Phelps, Williams and the rest of Team USA have already made us all very proud. We all look forward to seeing the continued success the Americans have in the rest of the Rio games.
