A little after dawn on Sunday morning, when most New Yorkers were sleeping off their Fourth of July celebrations, a family went into mourning after rushing to Bronx River Park to identify the dead body of their daughter. 22-year-old Jasmine Gonzalez was the victim of multiple stab wounds to the torso, and her ex-boyfriend and father of her 2-year-old child was arrested for the murder.
Borden was actually the one who called 911 after supposedly stumbling upon the body of his ex-girlfriend while walking her family’s dog. According to Gonzalez’s sister Jayselle, he had returned to their house while everyone was sleeping after killing Jasmine, and changed into a different pair of clothes to cover up his tracks. He also woke Gonzalez’s mother asking for the dog’s leash to make it seem like he was merely going to walk the dog and not trying to clear his name from the list of possible suspects in Jasmine’s murder.
Unfortunately for Borden, the police recovered a backpack from behind a curtain in the Gonzalez’s Bronx home, in which they found a pair of blood-stained jeans, a towel, and empty sheath to hold kitchen knives.
Gonzalez and Borden are reported to have been in an on-and-off relationship since high school, but their relationship was always turbulent. Their arguments often grew increasingly violent and after one particularly aggressive fight, Gonzalez lost custody of their son, according to Jayselle. Despite living in a homeless shelter in Brooklyn, Borden was given custody of Khiry’Amir, though the toddler was under the care of Gonzalez’s uncle on Sunday.
After spending most of the day talking with Borden, the police arrested him Sunday night and he was charged with murder, manslaughter, and possession of a weapon. Borden has seven previous arrests on his record, and though the killer will be brought to justice, Jasmine Gonzalez’s family is completely inconsolable.
Jayselle Gonzalez mourned, “I cried this morning, but I feel like I am going to cry forever.”
