Happy International Kissing Day, everyone! In case you are not the biggest soccer fan, let us clue you in: last night, the U.S. team won the FIFA Women’s World Cup after beating Japan 5-2. Yes!
However, after celebrating the win (and celebrating Carli Lloyd’s amazing hat trick in the first 16 minutes), social media became flooded with vines, gifs, and tweets about Abby Wambach’s post-game kiss with her wife.
We have to admit, it was an incredibly beautiful moment.
Wambach, 35, knew that this was her last World Cup, after playing on the Women’s National Team for almost 15 years, so winning that title meant more to her than we can even imagine! Her mother, Judy, told the press that Abby felt that winning a World Cup was necessary in order to “validate” her professional career.
The crowd went crazy for the player, cheering her name as she came on for the last ten minutes of the match, and they cheered even louder when she finally saw her team win a World Cup.
Immediately after that final whistle blew, Wambach ran towards the stands to her wife of almost two-years, Sarah Huffman, and they shared an elated kiss that basically melted the entire audience.
With the recent law change allowing same-sex marriage in all 50 states, the kiss represented several victories all in one moment.
Even though Wambach owns an Olympic gold medal and holds the world record for most international goals (for both women and men), we’re so glad that she finally got to hold that golden trophy.
