At a show at Wembley Stadium Wednesday night, fans of the international living legend received a handwritten note alluding to the fact that she may very well quit touring once her latest tour for the album 25 ends on July 2nd.
The letter, featured above, reads in part: “Touring is a peculiar thing, it doesn’t suit me particularly well. I’m a real homebody and I get so much joy in the small things.” Once this tour ends, she’ll have done 123 shows in 15 months. Her note continues, “I wanted my final shows to be in London because I don’t know if I’ll ever tour again and so I want my last time to be at home” followed by enthusiastic thanks to all her fans for coming to what may be the last tour she ever does.
Adele launched into stardom early in the social media days, getting signed by XL Recordings after a friend posted her demo on Myspace. Here albums have been named after the age she was when they were released, starting with 19 in 2008. She became an instant star in the US after appearing on SNL to promote that album later that year.
Her songwriting and distinct voice have added her to the short list of artists who need only one name for everyone to instantly know who you’re talking to. Her songs have covered everything from heartbreak, nostalgia for youth, to empowering call-outs of exes and mature, empathizing reminiscences of those same exes. Even though she’s only released 3 albums, she’s had 13 Billboard Number 1 songs and dozens that are instantly recognizable, that anyone could sing every lyric to.
Her “Carpool Karaoke” video with James Corden of The Late Late Show, is Corden’s most viewed video in that category with 162 million views; the next closest of those videos stars Justin Bieber and has only 117 million views. She starts the video at the height of British stereotypes by chugging a mug of hot tea and regails Corden with tales of her drunken generosity, proving that she’s the best friend we all wish we had.
25 came out in November of 2015 and, according to Rolling Stone, “shattered ‘NSync’s long-standing single-week U.S. album sales record, selling 3.38 million copies in its first week compared to the 2.42 million copies the pop group sold of No Strings Attached.” “Hello” wong Song of the Year at the Grammys and she also took home Album of the Year.
