Everyone is looking forward to watching the Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B biopic.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this movie; some fans and family members of Aaliyah weren’t completely thrilled with the choice of who is portraying her and her life story. However, we are only days always from the premiere and it seems as though most of us are warming up to the idea of Alexandra Shipp playing the role. We have seen some promo footage and photos of the comparison between her and Aaliyah, and even I must admit that it’s pretty similar. Truthfully, nobody can fully embody Aayliah’s image and no matter who was chosen, fans would not have been happy. So all things considered, I believe Alexandra a good choice. I also liked the idea of Zendaya playing the part but unfortunately for her that didn’t work out. Both ladies have endured tons of backlash from fans and the media regarding the film. In a recent interview, Alexandra discussed the backlash she has received and how she is dealing with it. She said:
“It’s been hard, you know? When people sit behind a computer screen they can say some very mean things. At the same time, I know why I did this movie. Because I am a huge fan of Aaliyah. Because I know way too many people who have never heard of her. I think the fans will love this movie. It celebrates this woman. For me, that’s why I wanted to do it. Because I wanted to be a part of the celebration. Keep in mind this isn’t HBO and Showtime, this is Lifetime. We are going to be talking about her relationship. At the same time this is a movie celebrating the woman’s life, not unearthing any craziness about it.”
