Baltimore erupted into riots after Freddie Gray’s funeral. Gray died last week when he suffered a spinal cord injury while in police custody. Since then, Police and National Guard troops have been deployed throughout Baltimore. According to the Maryland National Guard, 2,000 troops have been deployed and more could be deployed until the number reaches close to 5,000. The Baltimore state police has also asked for at least 500 more officers from Maryland and up to 5,000 from other states.

During the riots 200 people were arrested, over ten buildings and over 100 cars were set on fire. This comes a few months after similar events occurred in Ferguson. The incident once again sparked the constant debate on the treatment of black men by police officers and law enforcement tactics and procedures.

The city was on a 10 pm to 5 am curfew and all schools were closed today. While people begin to clean up the mess left behind after the riots, President Obama has spoken about the incident saying “There’s no excuse for the kind of violence that we saw yesterday. That is not a protest. That is not a statement. It’s a handful of people taking advantage of the situation for their own purposes, and they need to be treated as criminals.”
