Police in Charleston, West Virginia reported Wednesday that a man at been shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy when the suspect allegedly reached inside the police car and tried to grab the officer’s gun.
55-year-old John O’Handley had been arrested for manufacturing meth and was being transported to jail when he reached between the seats and tried to grab the officer’s service weapon. The deputy reportedly fired a single shot, hitting O’Handley in the head and killing him. This was apparently an older police car without the characteristic divider between the suspect in the back seat and the officer in the front.
O’Handley had complained about having his arms handcuffed behind him so he had been handcuffed with his hands in front instead.
There is no report yet as to the race of either the shooting victim or the officer.
