Convicted murderer and prison escapee David Sweat was recently shot near the Canadian border. Officials claim that he is wounded, but he is alive and in custody just south of the border. According to New York Senator Chuck Schumer, none of the officers on the case were injured. Reportedly, Sweat was shot in the head twice and is now coughing blood.
Sweat was sent to Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, New York, on Sunday. The shooting took place about three weeks after Sweat and former cellmate, Richard Matt, escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in New York. Matt was shot and killed by law enforcement on Friday. He was killed in Malone, which is about 40 miles away from the prison where he and Sweat previously resided.
Over 1,300 officers were in Malone and Duane on Sunday. For a long time, there was no evidence that Sweat was anywhere near the area. He was given a lifetime prison sentence for the murder of a sheriff’s deputy on the Fourth of July in 2002. His cellmate, Matt, was serving 25 to life for the murder of his ex-boss.
According to Governor Andrew Cuomo, these past three weeks of searching have been “expensive,” but he has “no doubt” that the time, effort, and money they put into it was “worth it.”
