Omar Mateen was said to have an assault rifle along with a handgun and exchanged a gun fire with an officer outside of the nightclub before going in and taking hostages. The officer called in the situation calling for back-up. Back up came and they exchanged fire with the suspect. President Obama has been briefed and has asked to stay updated on the events that unfold.
The stand-off happened at around 2am and at 5am the S.W.A.T. Team was sent in to secure the hostages. Omar was killed in a gun fight between him and the S.W.A.T. Team but not before killing 50 club goers that night and injuring even more. People from inside the club relay the terrible night of the shooting sounds and trying to hide in hopes of making it out alive. A son text his mother letting her know the gunman was now with them and that was the last text she got from him. I just heard a friend of mine was at the club. I am checking to see if he is ok. We have a friend that works at the hospital in Orlando, Florida. More to come as we get updates.
The police are naming this a “domestic terrorist act”, but they are dubbing this the worst shooting in U.S. History. The motives of the shooter were unclear but authorities are guessing he worked alone. This was a specifically targeted attack. With 53 critically injured the trauma surgeon expects to see the death number rise. More on this story as it unfolds.
