61-year-old Mamadou Diallo was arrested and charged with manslaughter for attacking Earl Nash, who attempted to rape his wife in their Bronx apartment at 9:30 pm last night. The Lyft driver used a metal tire iron to beat Nash until he was severely injured and then died from trauma all over his body. The manslaughter charge was then decreased to an assault charge.
43-year-old Nash was seen shirtless and near an elevator in surveillance footage when, suddenly, Diallo popped out from an elevator and quickly bashed Nash repeatedly. Surveillance footage also shows Dash fleeing into the elevator, where Diallo continued to beat him until he was bloody, unconscious, and with a fractured skull.
Neighbors described a man knocking from door-to-door, asking for water inside the Claremont Village apartment building. It was Diallo’s wife, Nenegale Diallo, who opened her door thinking it was her husband.
Nash forced himself through their door and allegedly said, “I don’t want your money, I’m going to rape you,” when Nenegale offered him money. Nenegale was then beat with a chair and Nash tore her clothes off when she tried to run to the door. Nenegale’s sister was also attacked for 20 minutes, and both continued to battle Nash for a while, so Nenegale could finally call her husband for help, who was outside.
With Nash’s long history of 19 arrests including conviction for bribery and drug-related crimes, Diallo’s charge decrease is understandable, but can still be changed as further investigations continue.
Diallo is seen an neighborhood hero, but the image of his naked wife laying on the 6th floor hallway screaming, “That’s him, don’t let him out!” will never leave his mind.
