Oh boy, the claws definitely came out on Tuesday’s episode of The View.
Candace Cameron-Bure was a guest host for the episode’s ‘hot topics’ section, and she ended up getting into a heated argument with fellow host, Raven-Symone.
Symone got defensive when Bure stated that she supported a bakery in Oregon that refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple.
The Oregon Labor Coalition fined the bakery owners $135,000, a sum that was to be paid to the lesbian couple that they refused to serve. The owners were ordered to pay the money because of the emotional harm they may have caused the customers by denying their request, due to their sexual orientation.
The owners, Aaron and Melissa Klein, are still trying to appeal the ruling. They claim that making that wedding cake would go against their devout Christian beliefs, insisting that they “Stand for God’s truth, God’s word and freedom for all Americans.”
Bure claimed that, “It’s about constitutional rights. It’s about First Amendment rights. We do have the right to still choose who we associate with,” but Symone was not accepting any of Bure’s opinions. In fact, she cut Bure off at this point, saying “I refuse to associate myself with you right now. Is that okay?”
Symone began the argument with a very respectful tone, though. She referenced the law, stating, “The Oregon law bars businesses from discriminating against sexual orientation, race, disability, age or religion.”
Then, the former Disney Channel star added her interpretation, continuing, “to me, it’s the same exact thing that they did back in the day saying that black people couldn’t do certain things because it’s my religious belief.”
Bure shot back by accusing Symone of comparing “apples to oranges,” and Symone’s facial expression showed her feelings on that sentiment pretty clearly (hint: she was not happy about it).
Eventually, fellow host Whoopi Goldberg closed the discussion before it could get too out of control. However, the tension in the room was quite apparent.
