Chris Rock’s monologue is not just a monologue, it’s a stance, an explanation and a response to the controversy the 88th Annual Academy Awards has received. With his witty charm, Rock did not disappoint. In a few words, Rock’s performance was nothing short of fantastic.
Rock made witty jokes like, “You realize if they nominated hosts I wouldn’t even get this job. You’d be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now,” who was in fact an Academy Award host. Rock also expressed the amount of stress he was in to speak out, while being respectful to the occasion, “People are like Chris, you should boycott. Chris, you should quit! How come it’s only unemployed people to tell you to quit something. I thought about quitting, I thought about it real hard,” after mulling over his murky situation he concluded, “They’re gonna have the Oscars anyway! They’re not gonna cancel the Oscars because I quit. And the last thing I need is to to lose another job to Kevin Hart, okay?”
That was a ‘haha’ moment for an individual of any race.
But, by far the funniest and best line of the monologue was the jabs at the Smith family. First, Rock tackled Jada, “Everybody went mad [this year] … Jada [Pinkett Smith] got mad. Jada said she’s not coming. Isn’t she on a TV show? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.”
Serious ouch! But, Rock did not stop there, the harsh but hilarious comments continued, “I understand you’re mad. I’m not hating. … Jada’s mad her man Will [Smith] was not nominated for Concussion. I get it … It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. You’re right. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West, okay?” Oh man! As, The Weeknd later sang, Will you earned it, because you deserve it, the way you work it.
Round of applause for the way Chris Rock is addressing the most talked about issue in the media flawlessly!
