A 16-year-old Connecticut high school student died Friday after she had been attacked and stabbed inside the school’s stairwell at around 7:14 a.m., according to authorities.
Maren Sanchez, was a junior at Jonathan Law School, and was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital despite attempts by emergency responders and teachers to save her life, authorities said.
“There was blood on her neck. It was awful,” Sam Garcia, a 16-year-old junior said, according to Reuters. “I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out.”
Local media reports have indicated that she was attacked because she refused to go to prom with the attacker later tonight. She had a boyfriend. The prom was supposed to take place at a banquet hall, but it has now been postponed.
The suspect, who’s the same age as Sanchez, “was subdued by teachers immediately after the attack and is in custody,” authorities said. It looks like the victim and suspect were “friends” on Facebook.
The school had been put on lockdown Friday morning, and students were told to go home after the incident. Police state that the attack was an isolated incident.
Sanchez was swim team manager and an honor student. Officials say that she was heavily involved with community service.
