Delta State University in Mississippi is on lock down after the murder of Professor Ethan Schmidt, who was found shot in the head in his office. It remains uncertain whether or not Schmidt is the only victim of this shooting as well as the whereabouts of the victim. According to Mississippi Department of Public Safety Warren Strain the suspect is not believed to be in the building.
Delta State, consisting of a little less than 4,000 students was locked down somewhere around 10:45 this morning, In a Facebook message to Associated Press English professor Don Mitchell reported, “Many students are locked down in classrooms, and professors and staff members are telling them the protocol. Plus, we are all texting and Facebooking each other to make sure we are safe.” According to the Mississippi Business Journal, the school was evacuated later in the day.
Professor Don Mitchell also commented on Professor Ethan Schmidt saying that he was a gentleman and a “terrific family man, a good friend, a true son of Peabody, Kansas, and his beloved Emporia State University.”
Professor Ethan Schmidt graduated with a PhD in philosophy from the University of Kansas in 2007. He started working at Delta State in 2013 as a Native American and Colonial History professor. Schmidt is also the author of two books.
Those assisting in the investigation include the Cleveland Police, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Bolivar County Sheriffs Department, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
