It was just Derek being Derek. It was just meant to be.
The Yankees won their home season finale over the Baltimore Orioles by the final score of 6-5. In typical Jeter fashion, he delivered the game winning single in the bottom of the 9th. In his final home game, Jeter gave the Yankee crowd one last memory.
Jeter went 2-5 with a double and three RBI’s. In the bottom of the first inning, he doubled off the left centerfield wall to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the ninth however, things seemed to be in Jeter’s favor. Closer David Robertson gave up a two run home run to Adam Jones to make it 5-4. Two batters later, Steve Pearce connected on a solo home run to tie the game at 5. Then the magic happened.
Jose Pirela singled to lead off the inning, he was pitched run by Antoan Richardson. A sacrifice bunt put Richardson to second base. Then Jeter came up to the plate.
Jeter stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, with a runner on second base and lined a base hit into right field. It was his 7th career walk off hit (first since June 8th, 2007.)
It was only right for him to get the game winning hit and ride off into the sunset.
Jeter will travel with the team for the final season series against the Boston Red Sox. He stated that he will play at “some capacity” and will not play shortstop. The Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday.
Ride off into the sunset, Mr. November!
