During a campaign stop in South Carolina on Wednesday, Donald Trump publicly mocked disabled New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski.
Kovaleski is suffering from a chronic illness called arthrogryposis, this condition makes it difficult for him to move his arms. Trump used this handicap as a way of imitating Kovaleski during his speech, and made an outrageous impression while he was criticizing one of Kovaleskis articles.
After the shocking event, Donald Trump went forward claiming he did not even know who the reporter even was. Kovaleski, on the other hand, stated that the two of them were on first-name basis for years and he interviewed Trump in his own office.
Coming Thursday, Trump still refused to back down and even went as far as asking for an apology from Kovaleski, saying he could not have made fun of him since he didn´t even know who he was. Trump then proceeded to release a statement regarding the issue: “I have no idea who this reporter, Serge Kovalski is, what he looks like or his level of intelligence,” Trump said, misspelling the reporter’s last name. “I don’t know if he is J.J. Watt or Muhammad Ali in his prime — or somebody of less athletic or physical ability.”
