On a scale of one to ten, how badly do you think Screech is screeching right now? On Thursday, a judge sentenced Dustin Diamond (the actor who portrayed Screech on NBC teen sitcom, Saved by the Bell) to four months in jail and 15 months of probation. This stems from a stabbing incident in Port Washington, Wisconsin, back in December 2014. He will report to jail this Sunday.
Late last month, Diamond was found guilty of a pair of misdemeanors. One was that he carried a concealed weapon, and the other was that he engaged in “disorderly conduct” with that weapon. He was able to avoid a felony count of second-degree “recklessly endangering safety” because one jury found Diamond not guilty of that particular charge. However, if he had been convicted of that felony, he could have faced up to ten years in prison.
Diamond’s fiancée, Amanda Schutz, was found guilty of disorderly conduct as well. She and Diamond got into a physical fight with two men and one other woman around Christmas of last year. One of the men was injured from a folding knife, and the puncture was about half an inch deep. Police found that knife in Diamond’s SUV once the vehicle was pulled over.
When the trial was going on, Diamond apparently testified that the fight broke out when the men started to attack Schutz. He additionally claimed that the stabbing was purely accidental. Still, witnesses said that Schutz was the main aggressor.
This testimony was quite different than what Diamond told the police when he was arrested late last year. He’s convincing, supposes Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol, because he’s an actor.
