A Dutch traveler on board Malaysian flight MH17 that was shot down over the Ukraine border took a picture of the plane before he boarded. He posted on Facebook, “if the plane disappears, this is what it looks like”.
The Dutch traveller’s joke has left his friends confused, grieving and wondering if he was alive.
The traveler’s friends were making fun of the photo of missing Malaysia flight MH370, wishing him and his partner happy holidays. But later, they regretted what they said.
One wrote, “rest in peace dear Cor and Neeltje, and we wish strength to your family – what a nightmare this is.”
The photo went viral and was picked up by the world’s media, now having been shared more than 11,000 times.
It was a sad day for AIDS researchers and activists as they were stunned and horrified Friday to learn that the well known expert Dr. Joep Lange was among those killed aboard MH17.
The AIDS field has had a hard time absorbing all the news. They have all taken on an extra role as advocates for acceptance and treatment of people infected with the virus.
Lange was headed to an international AIDS meeting in Melbourne, Australia. Others attending the event feared Lange was on MH17.
President Barack Obama congratulated their work on Friday.
“In this world today, we shouldn’t forget that in the midst of conflict and killing, there are people like these, people who are focused on what can be built, rather than what can be destroyed; people who are focused on how they can help people that they’ve never met; people who define themselves not by what makes them different from other people, but by the humanity that we hold in common,” Obama said at a news conference.
