The movie, Straight Outta Compton, which grossed $199.5 million at the box office this year is under fire Friday as Jerry Heller, N.W.A.’s former manager, is suing for defamation of character. Heller claims he was unfairly portrayed in the box office hit and as a result wants to Sue Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and the movies producers.
Heller wants $35 million in compensatory damages and at least $75 million in punitives plus all profits from the flick, according to TMZ. Those also included in the suit are the Estate of Eazy-E and NBC Universal. Heller claims NBC made money from his back and that he never gave anyone permission to use his likeness.
Heller says he was portrayed as “the bad guy” and ‘’a sleazy manager who took advantage of Dre, Cube and Eazy-E.” Heller claims he never withheld a check of $75,000 from Ice Cube, persuaded Dre and Cube to sign unfavorable contracts, ate lobster lunches when the contracts were being signed or was fired by Eazy-E.
Cube told the Daily Mail Australia that he didn’t expect Heller to tell the truth. He feels… [Heller was] portrayed accurately, and was particularly unsurprised that Heller felt dissatisfied. “I don’t’ expect him to start telling the truth now, Cube says, ‘’so I expected him to say that.”
Cube continues,”We were totally fair with Jerry, I don’t have an axe to grind with that guy at all. He was actually a champion for the group when he came to us against outside forces but I just didn’t like how he dealt with us internally.”
