“TGS without Tracy Jordan is an oxymoron, like ‘liberal government’ or ‘female scientist,’” said Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) on an episode of the hit NBC sitcom, 30 Rock, back in 2011. If you heard that on TV, you probably laughed because it’s not nice. Everyone knows that’s not nice. Everyone, except for, apparently, Tim Hunt.
It was all over the news when the Nobel Prize-winning scientist made comments about women in the lab earlier this week. Hunt remarked, “Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. Three things happen when they are in the lab: You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticize them, they cry.” Not a good thing to say in a field that already intimidates women due to practically ancient prejudice against them.
Although the 72-year-old scientist eventually apologized for his in-poor-taste joke (and even called himself a chauvinist pig), female scientists were still unhappy, to say the least. Thanks to the Internet, female scientists everywhere started on the hashtag, “#distractinglysexy,” using it while they tweeted pictures of themselves in full laboratory gear, doing exactly what they’re there to do – work. If you’ve seen any of the pictures, you’ll know at least one thing. Those clothes are anything but revealing of skin.
Here at The Hot Zone, we stand behind these brave, intelligent ladies and applaud them as they stand up for themselves and their professions.
