Fifty Shades Of Grey was an interesting experience to say the least.
The movie, based on E.L James bestselling book misses its mark. For those who didn’t read the book, Fifty Shades of Grey tells the story of a young naive virgin Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson) who meets handsome billionaire Christian Grey (played by Jamie Dornan) with a mysterious past and a dark secret. Dakota Johnson delivered a great performance as Anastasia who evolved throughout the movie. However, Jamie Dornan gives a dreadful performance as Christian Grey. Doran has the look to be Grey but comes across as a pouty, charisma-free baby. His line readings are flat, his timing is awful (always a beat late) and he has no chemistry with Johnson. At times he sounds more of a robotic serial killer than a sexual dominant.
Now lets talk about important part of the movie: The Sex Scenes. Other than the performance of Johnson, the sex scenes was the best part of the movie Without spoiling much of the scenes, there were whips, cuffs, ropes and a flogger involved. While it won’t make it to Hollywood’s Sex Scenes Hall of Fame, it will make the audience curious (especially the women.)
But these pleasantries do not adequately prepare us for the inevitable moments when “Fifty Shades” is forced to go over to the dark side, when Christian’s actions come to feel abusive and not consensual and the delicate balancing act this film has been engaged in comes crashing down.
Sam Taylor-Johnson (directed Nowhere Boy) version is a wildly confused treatment of a perennial confusing subject. It sticks true to the book so I will give her credit.
If you are going to see this movie this Valentine’s Day with your significant other, from a guy’s perspective he may not like it. From a woman’s perspective, she might think it’s the best movie ever made. It is mostly a date night movie. Guys, make your women happy and take her to see this movie.
Overall it was a borderline terrible movie.
