How To Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

I always wondered why we make New Year’s resolutions, knowing the odds of actually keeping them are very slim. Yes there is that tiny percentage of those who successfully stand by the promises they made. However, the majority of us break within the first few weeks and as a result feel absolutely horrible for failing.

Here is a list of the most popular New Year’s eve resolutions:

  • Lose Weight
  • Volunteer to Help Others
  • Quit Smoking
  • Get a Better Education
  • Get a Better Job
  • Save Money
  • Get Fit
  • Eat Healthy Food
  • Manage Stress
  • Manage Debt
  • Take a Trip
  • Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
  • Drink Less Alcohol

So how can we stick by these resolutions? First, you must accept the fact that change takes time. Nothing happens overnight. Expecting to be “brand new” in less than 24 hours is absurd. Secondly, think positive. Being a “negative nancy” will not make the journey any easier. Thirdly, acknowledge that you may face a few setbacks. This should not discourage your path or give you the green light to give up and fall back into bad habits. Also, do not feel miserable for having a weak moment. Just get back on the horse and try again! Lastly, stay away from people who do not support your journey to keeping your resolutions. Whether we like to admit it or not, friends and family have a heavy influence or our decision making. Keep away from those who do not believe in your path and only surround yourself with love and support.
