Do you stand with PP? Because hundred of Planned Parenthood supporters gathered today in New York’s Foley Square debuting their first National Pink Out Day to garner attention for the media’s misrepresentation of an organization that simply wants health care for those who need it.
In light of recent videos in which Planned Parenthood allegedly donates fetal tissue, the Republican party is aggressively trying to stop the $450 million funding for the organization, and have even threatened to shut down the government if the funding continues.
Despite confirmation that the fund money does not cover abortions aside from specific cases, including rape, and less than one percent of health centers profit from abortions, the efforts to put an end to Planned Parenthood do not seem to be slowing down any time soon. However, these supporters who speak for nearly 3 million Americans who receive less costly health care and sexual education, refuse to back down.
In response to what they believe is an “unprecedented attack on women’s health,” Planned Parenthood has collected 2.4 million signatures for a petition that will be presented to Congress and provided free STD testing at 28 different sites.
One woman who spoke at the Foley Square rally expressed her reason for backing Planned Parenthood to Cosmopolitan: “Because people with ovaries are still being treated like second-class citizens. Because I have a daughter. Because I was once a girl. Because I’m a woman. And because the government is supposed to serve the needs of people called women too.”
The future of Planned Parenthood has yet to be determined, but there are very strong forces at work here. If you support Planned Parenthood, share your message on social media followed by the hashtag #IStandWithPP and contribute to the efforts of those fighting for more than just choice, but healthcare and education that should be treated as a right, not an issue.
