One couple’s love story has, sadly, come to an end.
According to CNN, Dalton Prager, who is the 25-year-old husband from the real-life Fault in Our Stars couple, has died.
Dalton and wife Katie Prager’s relationship began when they were just 18-years old. They had met on Facebook. Katie, who has cystic fibrosis, was encouraged not to meet up with him, because he had a highly contagious infection for people with cystic fibrosis called Burkholderia cepacia.
Despite there being a risk she could contract the bacteria, Dalton traveled to Kentucky to meet her. She said she chose to meet Dalton, because she knew it would make her life much happier.
“I told Dalton I’d rather be happy — like really, really happy — for five years of my life and die sooner than be mediocre happy and live for 20 years,” Katie explained. “That was definitely something I had to think about, but when you have those feelings, you just know.”
The couple was married two years later, but unfortunately, Katie ended up contracting the bacteria.
Dalton and Katie later received lung transplants. Dalton’s seemed successful at first, but he then developed lymphoma, overcame cancer and was recently hospitalized with pneumonia and a viral infection.
Katie, however, has been in and out of the hospital since receiving the transplant. Her doctors recently told her that there was nothing more they could do for her.
On Saturday, Dalton, sadly, passed away in St. Louis. Katie was unable to be there on the day he died, because she is in hospice in Kentucky. The couple had not seen each other since their five-year wedding anniversary on July 16.
Katie FaceTimed with Dalton as he passed away.
“She told him that she loved him,” Katie’s mother, Debra Donovan, said. “We don’t know if he heard her.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dalton, Katie and their loved ones during this difficult time. We are so happy they were able to experience the five years of love that they did.
