You might have heard that Jeb Bush (yes, of that Bush family) is a Republican contender for the United States presidency in 2016. What you might not have heard is that in 1996, Bush and a co-author named Brian Yablonski published a book that talked poorly about single mothers in America. They wrote that when a woman is a single mother, there is “no longer a stigma attached to this behavior” and suggested that was a mistake. This quote can be found in a chapter entitled, “The Restoration of Shame.”
When Bush was in Poland on Thursday, he was confronted by reporters about the book, called Profiles in Character. Bush claimed that his intention was not to shame single mothers, but rather to hold fathers more accountable to their paternity. He added that his views on single motherhood have “evolved,” but he still believes that it is important for fathers to be involved in their children’s lives.
This seems to be a theme with Bush. In his two terms as a Florida governor, he wanted to enact legislature that would make it more difficult for fathers to refuse to pay child support.
Bush is expected to officially declare his candidacy for the presidential election this Monday.
