Kim Kardashian has recently opened up about experiencing racism in the public eye.
In an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kris Jenner and 33-year-old Kardashian flew to Austria to attend the Vienna Ball. At the ball, they were approached by a man in “blackface” impersonating Kanye West.
After the awful incident took place, the mother-daughter duo overheard an interview where the N-word was used. Jenner talked about what happened on the show saying, “We need to get the hell out of here.”
Returning home on the plane, they came in contact with a woman making racial remarks about Kardashian and West’s 1-year-old daughter, North West. On the show, she explained the “trip from hell” to her sister, Khloe. She said, “I fell asleep, I woke up to this woman screaming, ‘Kanye West’s baby!’ The woman is screaming at my child, I jump up…”
Jenner, 58, finished the story, adding:
“This lady stood up in the cabin in first class, and yelled at the top of her lungs, ‘She’s with a black guy, and that baby is black! And you need to shut that black baby up!'”
Kardashian revealed that experiencing racism for the first time was a wake up call and made her more aware of it now that she had a daughter of mixed race.
She expressed her feelings in a blog, stating:
“To be honest, before I had North, I never really gave racism or discrimination a lot of thought. It is obviously a topic that Kanye is passionate about, but I guess it was easier for me to believe that it was someone else’s battle. But recently, I’ve read and personally experienced some incidents that have sickened me and made me take notice. I realize that racism and discrimination are still alive, and just as hateful and deadly as they ever have been.”
She added, “I want my daughter growing up in a world where love for one another is the important thing. So the first step I’m taking is to stop pretending like this isn’t my issue or my problem, because it is, it’s everyone’s.”
Racism is still a huge concern in today’s society. I’m glad that a celebrity like Kardashian decided to speak up about her personal experiences with it and shed some light on the situation. I agree with her one hundred percent. It is an issue that becomes everybody else’s when nothing is done about it.
What do you think about Kardashian revealing her experiences with racism?
