Matt Damon faced a slight faux pas today when a video of him surfaced while in discussion with African-American Producer Effie Brown talking about diversity in Hollywood.
The discussion follows the premier of a new show,”Project Greenlight”, that centers around a pre-chosen script, “Not Another Pretty Woman,” a romantic comedy about a man who ends up marrying a black prostitute after getting left at the altar. After choosing a director from a pool of contestants, a panel, including Damon and Ben Affleck, guides him or her to success. In the first episode, the panel figures out who that director should be.
Here is a snippet of what happened, and the transcript below.:

“I just would want to urge people to think about, whoever this director is, the way they’re going to treat the character of Harmony. Her being a prostitute and the only back person in the show…” Brown explains.
Damon responded, “When we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show,”
Brown is notably upset with Damon’s comments, but there isn’t context given to what happens between the two personalities afterwards. The full episode was broadcast a few days ago.
Users are responding to the clip, which has since gone viral, saying how Damon ‘lectures’ and ‘interrupts’ Brown. This isn’t exactly correct, as he seems to be simply continuing to talk as she tries to interrupt him.
The question of diversity in Hollywood has and still is an issue, yet there needs to be some credit given for people who are hired because they are the best person for the job – regardless of race or gender. This person will no doubt be suitable to handle the subject matter given to them.
Meanwhile, Damon has some damage control to do to try clear up his obviously poor choice of words.
