Singer Miley Cyrus is putting her fame to good use by launching a nonprofit foundation. The Happy Hippie Foundation hopes to bring awareness towards issues related to and affecting homeless youth and other vulnerable communities including the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual community while also rallying young people to fight injustice.
In order to raise money for her foundation the singer is teaming up with Backyard Sessions and Facebook to create a video campaign that urges fans to support the cause. The videos will feature Cyrus performing in her own backyard with a variety of famous singers including Joan Jet and Ariana Grande. Each video will debut on Facebook.
In a recent statement Cyrus said “Pointless judgment and its effects are unfortunately something that is way too common. All humans have valid feelings and rights! I want to use my voice as a megaphone to young people everywhere and encourage human evolution…No one should have to hide who they really are, no matter what his or her name, gender or status. That’s why Happy Hippies are here to say that every life is valuable!”
In an interview with Out Magazine the singer also stated that the murders of transgender women and the suicide of trans teenager Leelah Alcorn haunted her and helped drive her to create the foundation saying “The media moves too fast, I didn’t want another story like that to be a little blurb that people hear about and then it just goes away.”
