After embellishing his wartime experiences, viewers everywhere expected NBC to drop Brian Williams from their network. Well, apparently, NBC is going to keep the former anchor of NBC Nightly News. It is speculated that the network wants to try to prevent Williams from going to another network, even with his reputation as an untrustworthy anchor. It is likely NBC feared Williams would move to CNN, which is headed by former NBC Universal chief executive, Jeff Zucker. This channel, insiders speculate, would have been rather well-suited to Williams’ witty and comedic timing. Apparently, Williams even wanted to do late night, comedy television for awhile.
NBC is calling this the “Ann Curry treatment.” This refers to his move to another show, after Curry was made a roving reporter in 2012. Her departure from The Today Show caused a great deal of controversy at the network and for the viewers. They anticipate that Williams will transition to a position at Comcast’s MSNBC news. However, this decision isn’t definite. There are other working options for Williams. Interestingly, both Williams and Curry are represented by the same lawyer, Robert B. Barnett of Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C.
NBC Nightly News will be permanently anchored by Lester Holt. He will soon receive a long-term contract. Williams’ fate at NBC is undecided, but as of now, he will remain on the network’s payroll.
