According to Eyewitness News, Officer Peter Liang has been indicted for shooting Akai Gurley at the Pink Houses in East New York, Brooklyn last November.
The 28-year-old was walking with a female friend that night. Police claim that Liang’s gun accidentally went off while he held it.
PBA President Pat Lynch released this statement after the indictment was confirmed:
“This officer deserves the same due process afforded to anyone involved in the accidental death of another. The fact the he was assigned to patrol one most dangerous housing projects in New York City must be considered among the circumstances of this tragic accident.”
The grand jury have been deliberating since February 4. The charges bring brought against Liang are unknown at this time. He will surrender to face them tomorrow (Feb. 11).
Police Commissioner William Bratton has gone on record saying that Gurley was “totally innocent.”
Gurley’s domestic partner has filed claims against both New York City and the Housing Authority, seeking $50 million.
