Oscar-nominated actor, director and playwright Sam Shepard passed away in his home aged 73.
He was surrounded by his children and sisters in his home in Kentucky when he died peacefully. Shepard had suffered with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Spokesman Chris Boneau said that “the family requests privacy at this difficult time” and that funeral arrangements will be private.
Shepard had three children. He was married to O-Lan Jones from 1969 to 1984 with whom he has one son, Jesse Mojo Shepard.
In the early 1970’s, Shepard met Academy Award winning actress Jessica Lange, and they had a relationship for nearly 30 years, until 2009. They starred in many movies together including The Notebook, and have two kids – Hannah Jane Shepard and Samuel Walker Shepard.
Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for his play Buried Child and is the author of 44 plays as well as several books of short stories, memoirs and essays, reports the Daily Mail.
Some of Shepard’s plays included The Rock Garden, Chicago, The Unseen Hand, Cowboys and 4-H Club.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1983’s The Right Stuff.
