On Wednesday, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis is standing behind a tribunal to judge those bishops who were accused of covering up or did not prevent the sexual abuse of children. No other pope has ever done something like this. In fact, Pope Francis’ predecessor, Pope Benedict, reinstated a bishop who denied that the Holocaust ever happened back in 2009. This sounds like a great, progressive move from Pope Francis. However, certain groups of victims think the change has come too late.

For years now, groups of victims have been urging the Vatican to more deeply investigate the bishops’ past actions. The groups want all of these men to be more at fault for the child abuse, even if they were not directly guilty of the crime.  In fact, the American organization, Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (or SNAP), said the pope hasn’t done enough. They know he could have fired “dozens of… bishops” but instead, he hasn’t let go of any.

The tribunal has the potential to be revolutionary. There’s never been anything like it in the history of the Vatican. SNAP suggests that people keep a watchful eye on the possible proceedings, and we plan to do just that.
