School officials have banned a student from wearing his favorite backpack to school. The student is 9-year-old Grayson Bruce, a North Carolina resident. Officials claim the backpack is a “trigger for bullying”.
The boy was being bullied for wearing an effeminate backpack, so the school wanted to minimize his risk by banning what they found to be the cause of the bullying.
Greyon’s mother told WTVS CBS 6 News, “saying a lunchbox is a trigger for bullying, is like saying a short skirt is a trigger for rape. It’s flawed logic, it doesn’t make any sense.”
What the school has done is reinforced the blame on the victim of the bullying. The school is rewarding the bullies by telling them they’ve won, essentially. This kid likes ponies. So what? It is absolutely harmless. There is nothing to be ashamed of in liking a show and wearing the merchandise to school.
The school should focus less on blaming the victim and more on addressing the bullying. There is no such thing as an acceptable trigger for cruel human behavior.
The good news is that Greyson has a growing support page on Facebook.
I hope he continues to wear that backpack loud and proud!
