Starbucks, of course, is the go-to establishment for thousands of coffee lovers.
However, CEO Howard Schultz is encouraging his employees to exert some influence in an arena that some may not entirely approve of.
Race relations has been a constant topic of conversation lately, especially with rampant incidents of police brutality that many have linked to racial discrimination.
According to The Telegraph UK, employees have reportedly been told to write “race together” on coffee cups before handing them over to customers. In addition, there will be reading material in stores about race conversation starters.
Race, of course, is a delicate subject for many, and how it’s approached with language is an important part of opening the conversation, but I’m not sure Starbucks is the best conduit–considering that it’s an employee/customer dynamic, which is often problematic–even if intentions are pure.
