Right after recently announcing a billion-dollar savings plan that would involve laying off some employees, Target will be raising minimum wages to $9 an hour, CNBC reports.
The raise will go into effect in April, following fellow retail giants like WalMart, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx, which have made similar decisions in the last few weeks. Women’s advocacy group UltraViolet has been pressuring Target to make this change.
The federal minimum wage sits at a pitiful $7.25, although several states have it set at a slightly higher amount.
Unfortunately, as a part of Target’s $2 billion initiative to save money, 1,700 workers will be laid off and and 1,400 additional positions will be removed.
