Taylor Swift says she was wrong.
After a recent Twitter feud that got everyone riled up, Taylor Swift is tweeting out to apologize to Nicki Minaj for the misunderstanding.
In case you missed all the commotion, we’ll give you the jist of the story.
The MTV Video Music Award nominations were released on Tuesday, Jul. 21, and Nicki Minaj was left out of the nominees for the Video of the Year Award. The “Anaconda” singer felt snubbed and naturally, she took to Twitter to voice her opinion on the matter.
“I’m not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it,” Minaj tweeted out. “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.”
Taylor Swift, whose video for her single “Bad Blood” made the Video of the Year nominee list, took these tweets quite personally.
“@NICKIMINAJ I’ve done nothing but love & support you,” the 25-year-old pop star replied. “It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”
Minaj responded minutes later to the reply.
“Huh? U must not be reading my tweets,” she typed. “Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But you should speak on this. @TaylorSwift13.”
And Swift tweeted out again.
“@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on,” the 1989 star replied.
“Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs,” Minaj tried to clarify. “White media and their tactics. So sad. That’s what they want.”
Amidst the back and forth tweets, and the tons of other celebrities that got involved, one in particular stood out. Rumored inspiration for Swift’s VMA nominated video, Katy Perry, voiced her own opinion, of course, against Swift.
“Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…,” Perry tweeted. The star was calling Tay a hypocrite for writing about and profiting from her feud with Perry (“Bad Blood” is rumored to be about it). Minaj has favorite the tweet, by the way.
In an attempt to stop the madness, Nicki Minaj finally took to Instagram, on Wednesday, to set the record straight about her tweets. She tried to make it clear that her beef is with the system, and not with other women in the music industry.
“Nothing to do with any of the women, but everything to do with the system that doesn’t credit black women for their contributions to pop culture as freely/quickly as they reward others,” the Pinkprint artist wrote. “We are huge trendsetters, not second class citizens that get thrown crumbs. This isn’t anger. This is #information. It’s all love to MTV. Kisses to my fans and thank you for my 3 nominations.”
Taylor Swift posted to Twitter to apologize to Minaj for the complete misunderstanding on her part.
“I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I’m sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ,” Taylor posted on Thursday.
Nicki Minaj has not yet responded, but hopefully all is well now, and there’s no “Bad Blood” between Nicki and Taylor. Katy, on the other hand, is probably still not “Out of the Woods.”
Okay, I’m stopping. Promise.
