Taylor Swift has been making news since her last dispute with rapper Kanye West. This time there seems to be a new one brewing with singer Demi Lovato.
Ever since Kesha had lost her court case against Sony Music, accusing her producer Dr. Luke of sexual and physical abuse, Taylor Swift has reached out to Kesha in order to show her support by actually giving her a $250,000 check to help out with her legal fees. While most people would think this to be a generous offer, Demi Lovato seems to think quite the opposite.
She wrote a few tweets saying: “How the f—k am I making this about myself? At least I’m talking about it. Not everyone has 250k to just give to people. Would love to but I didn’t grow up with money and def haven’t made as much as her.” She continued by saying: “Frustrating to see women come forward with their past only to be shot down, not believed & disrespected for their bravery in taking action. Happens way too often. I’m ready for women to be taken just as seriously as men. Someone tell me why anyone would ever feel brave enough to come forward if they are most likely to be ignored or called a liar?” She ended by saying “I’m also ready for self-proclaimed feminists to start speaking out or taking action for women’s rights.”
Although Demi does make a very valid point, isn’t it contradictory to shoot down Taylor for helping another woman, if Demi claims to be a feminist? Taylor’s contribution was made because she was in the position to do so, and at the end of the day, legal bills have to be paid. That contribution alone made Kesha feel an immense amount of support given her inability to pay for the legal fees herself.
Demi also added: “I didn’t shade Taylor. If you take it that way than fine. I’m just tired of seeing women use ‘women empowerment’ and ‘feminism’ to further brands without actually being the ones that have the uncomfortable conversation.” Some have argued that Taylor’s acceptance speech at the Grammy’s was her showing that she is willing to have that uncomfortable conversation, even in the midst of her glory.
Taylor is one of several pop stars who have publicly supported Kesha following last week’s ruling. Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Grimes, Lorde, Lily Allen, and Kelly Clarkson have all expressed support for the singer on Twitter, where her fans have rallied under the #FreeKesha hashtag. “There are people all over the world who love you Kesha,” Lady Gaga wrote. “And I can say truly I am in awe of your bravery.”
