Brandy Norwood, better known as just Brandy is best known for being a Grammy award winning singer with hit songs like “I Wanna Be Down” and “The Boy Is Mine,” for her role as Chardonnay on the hit show “The Game,” and for famously playing Cinderella opposite the late Whitney Houston. But now the star is gearing up to conquer another sphere of entertainment, the Broadway Stage. The star is set to debut as Roxie Hart in the hit Broadway musical “Chicago” starting April 28th.
The Hot Zone had the opportunity to get a sneak peak at Brandy as Roxie Hart at Ripley-Grier Studios, performing some of the classic songs from the musical as well speaking to the singer about everything from her amazing career, to future projects to her experience on Broadway so far.
The star delivered two amazing performances, covering “Roxie” as well as “Nowadays” with veteran Broadway performer Amra-Faye Wright who plays Velma Kelly in the musical all while facetiming her mother and grandmother on her phone and innocently asking them if she did okay after she was done.
The company of Chicago originally reached out to the singer’s agent about the role and Brandy was originally hesitant about the role, worried that she might not be able to keep up with the choreography for the show. But after going to a work session, she wowed the reps for the Musical. The singer seemed very excited about this new venture and even exclaimed that she tries to put a little bit of herself into the character of Roxie Hart.
The singer also mentioned how humbled and blessed she felt to be given the opportunity to play the role of Roxie Hart in the hit show and how she hopes that she makes everyone proud. Brandy recommended that all of her fellow actors try out theater. She also hinted that her fans should be expecting a wide range of projects heading their way including new music, new television shows and even a possible book. Brandy debuts as Roxie Hart in Chicago, at the Ambassador Theater on April 28th. She will continue to play the role for eight weeks until June 21st, get your tickets now, you won’t want to miss this!
