When you think Lady Gaga, what immediately comes to mind? For me I see hordes of “little monsters”, as they are affectionately nicknamed by Gaga herself, dressed up in outfits more fitting for All Hallows’ Eve than a pop concert. But, given the circumstance, I didn’t even bat an eyelash.
When you think of Gaga, I hope that you think of her dressed in a silver unitard, complete with large golden wings and stilettos, singing “Artpop” as she sauntered towards a piano encased in ice. Gaga never fails to stun and impress.
Gaga’s reputation as an entertainer is bulletproof and her backup dancers march behind her in their avant-garde stampede of artistic innovation. Any one of “mother monster’s” minions in the monster pit (general admission) will affirm that Gaga’s fashion sense is contagious – but were they expecting an actual fashion show during her hit track “Fashion”? Surely, no one expected her to adorn herself in bubblegum-blue tentacles extending from her head and body while performing “Paparazzi” (what a great throwback) – talk about taking the “mother monster” moniker literally.
The highlight of the night was a surprise visit from the rest of the Germanotta clan, and Gaga’s special congratulatory message (of which was slightly explicit) to her younger sister, Natali, for graduating from College with a degree in Fashion. In tribute to her family, Gaga performed the song “Born This Way” – with just her voice and her piano. What.A.Treat! What separates Gaga from rival pop stars is that behind the glitz and glamour of her shows, there is raw musical talent. Moreover, Gaga’s vocals are outstandingly emotional and authentic; her lyrics are motivational and exciting.
When you come to one of Gaga’s shows (I say when merely because if you have not yet purchased a ticket, you should) be prepared to be blown away by the technology and creativity (also, don’t mind the confetti cannons) manufactured to put on a spectacular show. However, remember that underneath Gaga’s iridescent wig with unnaturally long pigtails is a locomotive fueled by a creative force that is currently unmatched in today’s musical realm.
