THZ recently caught up with Nick Lachey at Toys R’ Us in Times Square, where – in between stops on The Package Tour with his band 98 Degrees, New Kids on the Block, and Boyz II Men – he was promoting his new children’s album, A Father’s Lullaby. Despite a hectic schedule – Lachey also has a new album with 98 Degrees and is the host of NBC’s The Winner Is… – the singer warmly greeted each fan with genuine enthusiasm, and later spoke with THZ about fatherhood, life on the road, and how he makes time for his family.
THZ: You have so much going on! You have a new TV show, two new albums, and you’re on tour! How do you make sure to spend time with your family?
NL: You just gotta make sure you have time! You gotta carve that out because obviously that’s really important, too. [There is] always that balancing act of doing what you gotta do professionally, but also keeping your personal life separate and making sure you’ve got enough [time] for your family.
THZ: Is your family [wife Vanessa Lachey, and son Camden, 9 months] on tour with you right now?
NL: They are!
THZ: Are you doing anything special for Father’s Day?
NL: We actually have a show here in Brooklyn that night, so we’re going to be here in the city. I don’t know if my wife has any surprises planned or anything. As far as I’m concerned, just spending it with [Camden] is cool!
THZ: He is so cute! Does he have a favorite song on A Father’s Lullaby?
NL: Thank you! I think “Sleepy Eyes” is his favorite song.
THZ: Do you sing to him most nights?
NL: Yeah! I sing to him all the time.
THZ: What made you decide to branch out and do a children’s album?
NL: For me, music has always been the way I’ve been able to express myself, and when you’re a new father, you’re going through all of these emotions and feelings. I thought it would be a great opportunity to do a different kind of album, you know? So I looked into it, and there hadn’t been many lullaby albums done by guys, so I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s go for it!’
THZ: What can fans expect on The Package Tour?
NL: It’s a party! It’s literally a party for three hours. To be onstage with those guys – two legendary groups… It’s about 16,000 screaming women having a party! It’s awesome.
THZ: Who doesn’t like that, right?
NL: It’s awesome. It really is pretty cool.
THZ: Are you doing any mash-ups of your songs with NKOTB and Boyz II Men?
NL: We’re not. We all have our own separate set; everyone’s kind of got their own thing. We talked about doing something together, and maybe that will happen down the line, but for right now we’re just kind of doing our own thing.
