3. Britney Spears Wins Style Icon Award
When it comes to singing groups and pop-stars, I am one of those people who REALLY wishes people didn’t get older and things never changed. I wish I was still running towards the ice cream truck on Summer afternoons to get my delicious Spice Girl lollipop or constantly changing the radio stations to see if TLC’s “No Scrubs” was playing. Needless to say, but I’m not completely sold by the “Fifth Harmony’s” and the “One Direction’s” of the world. There’s just something missing I can’t quite put my finger on.
That’s why one of my top favorite moments from Sunday night’s Teen Choice Awards was when the girl group “Little Mix” presented Britney Spears with the Style Icon Award. It was a presentation representing the passing of the torch and the acknowledgement of the past that inspired the present and future. Of course, Britney is still doing her thing, but let’s be real. We will never really have the “Oops I Did It Again” Britney back.
Also, she looked phenomenal with the mermaid ombre hair. NAILED IT.
2. Ellen DeGeneres Sets The Speech Bar
Mostly every award winner last night gave a moving speech about being yourself and overcoming adversity, and that bar was set by Ellen DeGeneres. DeGeneres won for the best comic award, beating out some favorites such as Jimmy Fallon and even Kevin Hart, but her speech was the seal on the envelope. She delivered a moving monologue about being unique and her own difficulties with being different from everyone else, encouraging those in a similar position to embrace their qualities. Just check out the video below!
We all know Ellen as the hilariously awkward daytime host or the absent-minded and naive fish Dory, and we have all fallen in love with her for that quirky personality. Well after last night, if possible, we may have all fallen in love with her just a little bit more. Congratulations to Ellen on her well-deserved award!
1. In Memory Of Paul Walker
The best moment of last night was also the most heartbreaking. Earlier in the show, the song “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth won the award for Choice R&B/Hip-Hop song, which was predictable. Then, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Ludacris took the stage to accept the Choice Movie: Action/Adventure Award for “Furious 7,” which was also predictable, but no matter how much you prepared for an emotional speech, you were never quite ready for it.
Vin Diesel took over the reins and stressed how important the movie was because it reflected the cast’s actual relationship.
“We make these movies with our hearts. We really are a family. My kids refer to Luda as Uncle Luda…Uncle Ty Boogie…”
I mean c’mon! And as if that wasn’t enough, Paul Walker certainly was present in spirit at the awards as Vin Diesel made sure to bring attention to a very very special “teen” in the audience by the name of Meadow Walker: Paul Walker’s daughter.
It’s incredibly difficult to accept that he is gone, but it was invigorating to see the cast so unified by his memory. For the cast, for Paul, and for Meadow, they win my favorite moment of the night by a landslide.
