Fans of the 1986 action film Top Gun are rejoicing as Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed that a second film is in the works and that Tom Cruise will return as Maverick.
Although Ellison did not say this specifically, he did say that “There is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick” after explaining that the character will have a very important role in the upcoming sequel.
Earlier in 2014, co-producer on the first film Jerry Bruckheimer, explained that the plot of the new film would revolve around more present-day technology. He says that the film will address the question “are the pilots obsolete because of drones?” Before stating that, “Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay.”
Although there may have been some changes since then, Ellison confirms that the world in the upcoming sequel “is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters… It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”
With the first Top Gun coming in as the highest grossing film of 1986, we’re hoping that Top Gun 2 will be just as big.
So Top Gun fans, do you think you’ll go see the sequel when it comes to theaters?
