A shooting occurred Wednesday morning at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia where Republican Steve Scalise and four others were shot.
The shooter has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson from Belleville, Illinois. He was wearing a blue top and jeans and opened fire at the practice game using a rifle. President Trump said Wednesday that the gunman is now dead.
Scalise was shot in the hip, and he has undergone surgery. His injuries are not said to be serious.
Among those shot included the shooter, two Capitol Police officers and a staffer for Republican Roger Williams. Williams’ office announced that he had not been injured in the incident.
The president and First Lady expressed their thoughts on Twitter after the incident.
“Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him,” President Trump tweeted.
FLOTUS also took to Twitter to express her gratitude to those who helped during the shooting.
“Thank you to the first responders who rushed in to help protect those who were hurt in Alexandria, VA. My thoughts & prayers to everyone!”
Around 21 members of Congress were at this morning’s baseball practice. These included Scalise and two U.S. senators.
