In an extensive investigation by The Indianapolis Star, USA Gymnastics is blamed for covering up and not reporting complaints of sexual abuse by more than 50 of it’s former coaches.
In four cases, the Indianapolis Star was able to verify that USA Gymnastics had not initiated reports to authorities. In those four cases, the coaches were all later arrested, but not before they went on to sexually abuse at least 14 more people.

Bill McCabe, who is serving a 30 year sentence in federal prison, was named in a 2013 lawsuit that was brought against USA Gymnastics by one of the coaches former victims. In that lawsuit, former USA Gymnastics officials admitted under oath that the organization routinely dismissed sexual abuse allegations as hearsay unless they came directly from a victim or victim’s parent.
Three other coaches are serving long prison sentences and one has already killed himself in prison. In each of those cases, it was found that USA Gymnastics failed to send reports of accusations to investigators.
The complete story and the details about the lawsuits is featured in the Indystar investigation called ‘Out of Balance.’ The report was released just days before the 2016 Olympic games are to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
